'Scorched Earth vs Scorched Economy': Revisiting the debate of Kyoto COP3

09:20- 10:00

Almost 30 years ago, attendees at COP3 in Kyoto were transfixed by a debate on the economics of climate change. Inspired by the awarding of a Scorched Earth trophy by Friends of the Earth International to the US business group, the Global Climate Coalition, who retaliated with a 'Scorched Economy' award, the stunt provoked a heated and well-publicised debate at Kyoto. The theme reverberates today as politicians once again debate the merits of climate action and net-zero strategies as the real economy is poised for an energy transition.

As the widely acclaimed RSC play, KYOTO, takes London by storm, London Climate Action Week will host a reprise of the famous Kyoto 'Scorched Earth vs Scorched Economy' debate with the playwrights and some of the key protagonists of the original showdown debate, Nick Mabey, Tony Juniper, and counterparts from the IEA and American Enterprise Institute.

Who is winning the argument? Come and decide for yourself at this special event at the London Stock Exchange.
